Rodrigo Erthal's Vague: An Artistic Stool Inspired by Nature

Named after the French word for wave, Vague is a stool that embodies the essence of a water droplet falling into a river, creating a vibrant and continuous ripple. The design's visual lightness embraces only the bare essentials for its purpose, reflecting the designer's careful observation of nature's wisdom. The stool's structural curves form its shape, offering a different perspective from every angle, much like a piece of art.

The stool is constructed from steel tubes with a 5/16 inch diameter, bent and welded together using TIG type welding. The finished product is then coated with an electrostatic paint or a copper finish, enhancing its aesthetic appeal. The dimensions of the stool are 400mm x 390mm x 420mm (Width x Depth x Height), making it a versatile piece that can fit into various spaces.

Vague is not just a stool but also a piece of art. Its beauty creates a highlight in any environment, making it a ready-to-enjoy object of art. The design was conceived in São Paulo in April 2020 and has been produced in southern Brazil since August of the same year. The inspiration for the design came from nature, specifically the structure of leaves and the ripple effect of a water droplet falling into a river.

The creation of Vague was not without its challenges. The most difficult part was the 3D CAD modeling. Several studies were conducted to achieve the perfect shape. The result is a deconstructed stool with structural curves that form its shape, revealing a harmonious composition from every angle. The metal-cast stools bring out the poetry of the initial sketch; lines previously drawn morph into tubes, highlighting the environment as a ready-to-enjoy object of art.

Vague's unique design and artistic appeal earned it the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom.
